Why Your Gutters Overflow in Columbus Rain (Even When Clean)
You cleaned them in May. Then a July thunderstorm rolls across the outerbelt at five o'clock, and there's a sheet of water pouring over the back gutter onto the patio like the gutter isn't there. Then it stops raining, and the gutter is empty and clean. This is one of the most common calls we get in Columbus between June and September, and most of the time the gutter isn't clogged. It's either bent, undersized, or short a downspout.
Columbus rain comes in bursts
The 40 inches Columbus gets in a year doesn't fall evenly. A good share of it arrives in summer thunderstorms that can drop an inch in half an hour, and the National Weather Service in Wilmington logs a handful of those across Franklin County every summer. The old sizing rules — 5-inch gutter, 2x3 downspout, one per run — were written for steady rain. In a burst, a 2x3 downspout that drains 600 square feet of roof at an inch an hour drains maybe 300 at two inches an hour, and the back of a two-story in Westerville is putting 900 square feet onto it. The water arrives faster than it can leave, the gutter fills, and it spills over the front lip.
The three causes and how to tell them apart
1. The run dropped over the winter. This is the Columbus-specific one. A gutter full of ice weighs about eight pounds a foot, and spike hangers pull out of the fascia under it. By spring the run has a belly in the middle. Water pools there, and in a downpour it overflows in the middle of the run even though the ends are fine. On a dry day you can see it: sight down the gutter from one end, or look for a tide line of dirt and a puddle in the middle. The fix is a re-hang on hidden screw hangers and a pitch reset, usually $150–$300 per run. Mosquitoes over the gutter in July are the other tell; they need a week of standing water, and a properly pitched gutter is dry in a day.
2. The downspout is too small, or there's only one. If the overflow is worst at the far end from the downspout, or the whole run spills evenly while the downspout is gushing, the problem is capacity. Upsizing to 3x4 roughly doubles the flow, and adding a second downspout on any run over 35 feet splits the load. $150–$300 per downspout; a repair, not a replacement.
3. The gutter is undersized. Steep roof, big roof, or a valley funneling two roof planes into one spot. A 5-inch gutter can't hold the surge no matter how big the downspout. The tell is overflow right below a valley or where a dormer roof meets the main roof. The one that isn't the gutter
Water running behind the gutter looks like overflow from the yard. Up close, the gutter is half empty and the fascia is streaked. That's a roof edge without a drip edge, or shingles that stop short of the gutter — common on 1950s ranches in Whitehall and the Hilltop that have been reroofed twice with nobody adding the flashing. A gutter crew should spot it from the ladder; the fix is a roofer's, and it's cheap.
Why it matters more here than the wet patio
Overflow in Columbus ends up at the foundation. Most of Franklin County is clay that drains slowly, and a basement wall with 200 gallons pooled against it is a basement that leaks. Fixing gutter capacity is cheaper than anything a waterproofing company will sell you, which is why every job we do ends with downspout extensions carrying water at least 4 to 6 feet out. What to do
